CaliforniaThe San Francisco Zen Center was established in 1962 by the late Shunryu Suzuki-roshi, a direct spiritual descendent of the13th-century Zen Master, Dogen Zenji. By 1972, Zen Center had established three thriving practice sites, including Tassajara Zen Mountain Center, the first Zen training monastery in the West. Today, Zen Center is one of the largest Buddhist organizations outside of Asia, home to a diverse and growing community of priests, lay people, teachers and students. The San Francisco Zen Center supports three separate zen centers, they are:

OregonDharma Rain Zen Center is a Soto Zen Temple for lay practice under the direction of Kyogen and Gyokuko Carlson, who are zen priests and a married couple. Dharma Rain Zen Center The Eugene Zendo is an affiliated group, meeting 7:30pm Tuesday evenings, at 3480 Potter Street. For information call 341-1301. The Salem Sitting Group is another affiliated group, meeting 8:30am on the 3rd Saturday each month at the Unitarian Universalist Church, 490 19th NE. Call 623-8600 for information.
